Abstract

Background. Modern Russian education is facing the problem of how to employ the competency-based approach to teach Latin to medical students during their professional education. The problem is caused by new federal educational standards for higher schools, few scientific papers on the subject under study, the fundamentals of up-to-date foreign language teaching. The paper aims to reveal the specific character of goals, content and assessment of teaching professional Latin to medical students which is important in the context of the competency-based approach.
Materials and methods. The authors studied scientific works related to psychology, pedagogy, teaching methods, and specific issues. They also analyzed and generalized contemporary teaching experience of Russian universities and studied normative documents of the Russia’s Ministry of Education and Science.
Results. The authors revealed linguistic and teaching priorities for teaching Latin to medical students during their professional education. They also revealed the specific character of goals, content and assessment of teaching professional Latin to medical students.
Conclusions. The whole set of linguistic and teaching priorities related to the shift to a competency-based paradigm is reflected in goals, content, and assessment of teaching professional Latin to medical students. A course of professional Latin for medical students aims to develop their professional skills, which is reflected in teaching goals set in accordance with Healthcare and Medicine federal educational standards. There are three levels which medical students can achieve while learning professional Latin: basic, intermediate, and advanced. In the context of the competency-based approach it is important to focus on the following components of teaching professional Latin to medical students: texts for reading, practical assignments, and teaching techniques, which help to effectively employ intermediate and advanced assignments. Assessment of medical students learning professional Latin is based on university rating-based grading system of monitoring academic performance in order to ensure that the students’ formalized skills are assessed objectively and transparently.
